Light heather
Sport Grey and Athletic Heather are typically 90% cotton and 10% polyester, while the solid colors of the same tee are 100% cotton. DTG prints come out a touch softer on them.
A grey T-shirt mockup is harder than it looks: heather grey is a blend, a mid-tone and several different shades at once. Add your artwork and turn the shirt in 3D to check contrast on the front, back and sleeves.

Add your designGrey is a mid-tone, so it sits between your lightest and darkest colors. Black and white both show up on it; colors close to the shirt's own brightness sink into it. Check your design on the shade of grey you will actually print on.

Avoid mid-tone fills
Artwork has to be noticeably lighter or darker than the fabric. Mid greys, dusty blues and muted greens fade into a grey shirt.
The school and club look
Navy ink on a heather grey shirt is a long-standing combination for school and sports-club shirts. Black works the same way.
Charcoal behaves like black
On dark heather and charcoal, use white or light artwork, as you would on a black shirt. Thin dark lines disappear.
Heather softens fine detail
The speckled yarn can show through a print and softens thin lines and small text. Keep small type bold.
The 3D preview shows how your colors read against grey under studio light. A hex color gives a flat grey; switch the Fabric to Heather jersey for a flecked look. It does not simulate how ink sits on blended fabric.
Most grey tees are heather: yarn spun from fibers of different colors, usually cotton with some polyester. That is why the grey of a style often has a different fiber content from its other colors, and why it prints differently.

Sport Grey and Athletic Heather are typically 90% cotton and 10% polyester, while the solid colors of the same tee are 100% cotton. DTG prints come out a touch softer on them.
Darker heathers carry far more polyester: Gildan's Dark Heather is 50% on one tee and 65% on another. Check the spec sheet, not the color name.
Polyester takes DTG ink less readily than cotton, so prints on blended heathers look lighter and more worn, with fabric showing through. For the most solid print, pick 100% cotton.
Fibers can show through the ink on soft blended fabrics and dull the print. Polyester can also bleed dye into the ink over time, so printers use low-bleed inks on it.
Sublimation ink bonds with polyester, not cotton. On a cotton-rich heather the image washes out, so it is the wrong method for a 90/10 grey tee.
Some greys are dyed after sewing and not blended. Comfort Colors 1717 Grey is 100% cotton with no fleck, and its spec sheet asks for extra care with white ink.
Light heather, mid grey, dark heather and garment-dyed grey are four different products. Blank brands spell the color both ways, grey and gray, and one color name can cover different fabrics. Match the shade of the shirt you will actually ship.

90% cotton, 10% polyester. A light grey with a fine fleck. Pair it with the Heather jersey look.

90% combed ring-spun cotton, 10% polyester. A mid grey, spelled the American way on Next Level's color card.

50% cotton, 50% polyester. Dark enough to need light artwork. On Gildan's Softstyle tee the same name is 65% polyester.

100% ring-spun cotton, garment-dyed. A flat, washed grey with no fleck. Shades vary slightly between batches.
Colors are on-screen approximations of each brand's published color or swatch. Type the hex into Garment color to match your blank. Fabric looks change texture and sheen in the preview; they are visual presets, not a fabric simulation.

Pick any T-shirt on this page. It opens in the 3D editor with the fabric already set to grey, so there is nothing to recolor first.

Click Upload artwork and add a PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG. Drag it onto the front, back or a sleeve, and swap mid-tone fills for clearly light or dark ones.

Type your blank's hex into Garment color, then switch the Fabric to Heather jersey if your blank is heathered. Turn the shirt to check small text.

A mid-grey shirt fades into a grey studio backdrop. Pick white, a dark tone or a color in the Background panel, or choose Transparent for a PNG. Export 2K or 4K.
The same styles, set up for other shirt colors. Or go back to all T-shirt mockups and choose any color in the editor.
Grey is the neutral of the T-shirt rack, and a few kinds of shirt are grey by default.

Navy or black print on heather grey is a long-standing look for school and sports-club shirts, usually in one ink color.

Grey is the everyday color of workout tees, and blanks are named for it: Sport Grey, Athletic Heather. Light grey shows sweat more than charcoal does.

In one print-on-demand ranking, two heather greys place in the top six shirt colors. Show the same design on light and dark grey.

Heather grey is made from yarn that mixes fibers of different colors, so it looks flecked up close. A solid or garment-dyed grey is one even color. Heather usually contains some polyester; a solid grey is usually 100% cotton.
Rarely. Heather colors are blends by nature: Sport Grey and Athletic Heather are about 90% cotton and 10% polyester, and dark heathers are half polyester or more. For an all-cotton grey, look for a solid or garment-dyed grey.
Colors that are clearly lighter or darker than the shirt. On light heather: black, navy and other dark inks. On dark heather and charcoal: white and light colors. Mid greys, dusty blues and muted greens tend to disappear.
Start on this page: every style opens in the 3D editor already set to grey. Adding your artwork and previewing it in 3D is free, and the export panel shows any cost before you render a download. Log in with an email code or Google to upload artwork and render images.
Both are correct. Grey is the usual British spelling and gray the American one, and blank brands use both: Gildan sells Sport Grey, Next Level sells Heather Gray. It is the same color.
A mid-grey shirt and a grey studio backdrop are close in brightness, so the outline goes soft. Pick white, a dark tone or a color in the Background panel, or choose Transparent and place the PNG on your own background.
Yes. Garment color takes any six-digit hex, so set up the design once and render it in each shade. The cards above give starting hex values for four common grey blanks.
Yes. Garment color takes any six-digit hex, so you can try the same design on white, black or navy. The white, black, red and blue T-shirt pages start those colors for you.
